How would you feel if you knew that something you did caused another soul to
die, lost without Jesus. Knowing that because of your actions they now were
forever to be in a place so horrifying that man's words can't even capture its
true description?
Personally I'd say no thanks. But what if you did it without realizing it?
Sometimes what we conceive as ok, in another's eyes is sin.
As an example, I remember once being invited to a church and I was taught that
smoking was a sure fired way to get a ticket straight to hell! Well sure enough
the first thing I saw when I drove up was some of the active members smoking
away right at the doorway. What was my first impression? Who are these folks to
teach me anything, they are all headed to hell!
Each generation is taught different things, weather right or wrong teachings, we
hold to them, especially the older generation. Now what if your heart was so
close to God that you desired to save as many folks as you could. However your
actions put up a stumbling block for those who were in your presence? If people
can't see in your actions what they perceive to be God's image, then their faith
in anything you say will be quickly destroyed. Things such as how obedient you
are to your leaders in church. Your temperament, your pride, even your manner of
dressing says a lot about your relationship with God. God represents
cleanliness, put someone up in front who has mismatched clothing, wrinkled,
stained clothing, and the thought "well if they are to lazy to try to look
decent, maybe they are two lazy to take the time needed to pray and study God's
word?" God does not intend for us to be so full of concern about others views
that it takes from him, but he does expect us to be aware of our representation
of him. what we show of him can either draw people to him or repel them from
him.
Romans 14:1 Receive one who is weak
in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.
2 For one believes he may eat all
things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.
3 Let not him who eats despise him
who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God
has received him.
Recently I have found myself in the position of wondering if I have been a
stumbling block? So what do I intend to do to end that? Stop the things that
would hinder anyone from seeing AS much of God in my life as possible. Is it
easy? I wish. Is it costing me anything? Yes, some physical discomfort and some
emotional stress. But once it's over, I can be at ease with the new me. We all
have things that we feel is acceptable to God, but if it causes others to doubt
in our Christianity then what good are we to God?
